The spindly 6-foot-6, 185 pound small forward and native of Brooklyn is currently doing a post-graduate year at Laurinburg Prep in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
Delroy James is looking forward to teaming up with recent Rhody backcourt commitments Terrance Grier and Marquis Jones from St. Thomas More Prep in the Atlantic 10 next season.
"I'm really excited about (signing the letter of intent)," said James. "And I'm excited about the other players they're bringing in. I've played with Terrance Grier and Marquis Jones. Both of them have signed as well."
James is an offensive-minded lefty who'll wend through traffic for buckets, take his man off the dribble and occasionally knock down the mid-range jumper. He's been working on improving his consistency shooting the ball.
"My shot is something that I've been working on," said James. "My shot and my passing have to get better."
James travelled this summer with Doc Nicelli's Student-Athletes, Inc. team.
Delroy joins two older brothers in the Division I ranks. Shawn James was one of the leading shot blockers in college basketball last season as a freshman at Northeastern. Lex James is a junior at St. Francis, NY.
Delroy will stop by the Rhode Island campus on the weekend of November 19th, after Laurinburg plays in the National Prep Tip-Off Showcase at St. Andrew's School in Barrington, Rhode Island. He'll be joined by teammate Vernon Teel, whom James says is a priority for Rhode Island with their last scholarship in the class of 2006. Kay Ayeni, an athletic 6-foot-5, 175 pound swingman from Laurinburg, will also stop by campus. Ayeni is a post-graduate from East New York Transit Tech High School in Brooklyn.
