ABCD Camp Is Underway

TEANECK, N.J. -- Over the past decade, the ABCD Camp has always pulled out last minute surprises.

Under the guidance of longtime shoe impresario Sonny Vaccaro, the camp traditionally has been able to procure big-time prospects away from rival shoe companies.

When the camp was sponsored by adidas, Vaccaro was able to get blue-chippers like Rashard Lewis, Kwame Brown, Eddy Curry, Kendrick Perkins and Carmelo Anthony (even if it was only a day) to attend ABCD despite those prospects' previous sneaker affiliations.

Last year, ABCD made waves when big-timers Kevin Love and Darrell Arthur suited up for the Vector instead of the Swoosh.

This year, the big name is Derrick Rose, the outstanding 6-3 combo guard from Simeon H.S. in Chicago, Ill.

Even though Rose plays for the Nike sponsored travel team Mean Streets Express, Rose (and a Windy City entourage) are here at ABCD.

This is the 13th straight year that ABCD is being held at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Rothman Center. While next year remains unclear in large part due to adidas' recent purchase of Reebok, one thing remains consistent: the ABCD Camp continues to shrink in number of players.

In past years, it wasn't a stretch to see 230 or 240 players of various pedigrees here, but reliable sources say this year's event is down to a svelte 145-ish.
