It was in the late 1970's that I graduated from Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood, New York. To me, Molloy represented excellence in the sport of basketball as well as in the classroom.
There are many schools like Molloy in the New York City Catholic League. And it was a pleasure, as a student and now as a reporter, to watch the many great teams battle each season.
While many at Molloy (when I was in school) thought that Holy Cross and Christ The King were the biggest challenges, Bishop Ford always managed to get one's attention.
The program today is in great shape too. At the recent Hope Through Hoops Classic held on the campus of Hofstra University, Bishop Ford defeated Cary High School of Long Island, 71-59.
Ford possesses several impressive players. Among them -- sophomore Chaz Williams, who scored 18 points in the victory. Eion Lewis also had an outstanding game against the Mike Sands led Carey team. Lewis had 18 points.
Bishop Ford utilized its speed and quickness in the second half to offset a great game by Sands, who had 31 points. Jermaine Braumuller, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound junior, was impressive around the basket for Ford. Jermaine finished the game with 12 points.
Lewis and Braumuller are receiving some division one interest too. We'll post their recruiting situations on this site over the next couple of days.
*Many thanks to Peter Goyco, an assistant coach at Bishop Ford. Peter is a tremendous help to us throughout the year when it comes to information on the New York City Catholic League teams. And he's a class individual that really loves helping the kids in the area.
