Syracuse Recruit Discusses Future

Reporter Brian Towey has story on James Southerland ...

James Southerland didn't want to leave Cardozo High School, but ultimately decided he needed to make a switch.

The 6-foot-7 forward and Syracuse commit has enrolled at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., with an eye toward qualifying for college for the 2008-2009 school year.

"I'm at Notre Dame Prep," said Southerland. "I haven't reclassified; I'm a senior.

"The reason I left was because of the class. I needed to go to an environment where I could focus on books and ball. I love (Cardozo coach Ron) Naclerio, and I didn't want to leave him, but I needed to go to an environment where I could focus on education, and where there wouldn't be any distractions."

Southerland suited up with the D-I Stars at the IS8 League in Queens this weekend, showing off a fluid stroke and blossoming sense of confidence. James looks poised for a standout year at Notre Dame, with his exceptional shooting ability, length (and ever-growing frame), and burgeoning floor game.

James seems that much more confident from a year ago, and more aggressive. As he continues to gain strength and improve his ball skills, as they say, the sky is the limit. Recommended Stories
