Some results from action at the IS8 League in Queens this week.
Monday
- In a Catholic League tilt, St. Raymond's knocked off Archbishop Molloy 68-60. The Ravens wore Molloy down with their presses and depth, holding off a late Stanner run.
Daryl "Truck" Bryant, a 6-foot-1, 180 pound sophomore shooting guard, led Ray's with 18 points, while guards Terrance McGill and Gerald Colds pitched in with 14 and 10, respectively. 5-foot-11 senior point guard Kenny Gaskins was also impressive. The feisty southpaw pitched in with eight points on the offensive end and was a disruptive influence on "D".
Molloy, which was without 6-foot-9 junior Morgan Kelly, was led by forward Pete Mehmel's 16 points and activity around the hoop. Senior combo guard Milan Prodanovic was very solid, contributing 13 points. 6-foot-1, 155 pound junior shooting guard Rocco Rubino added 11 points.
- Mount Vernon, with superior depth and size, rolled past Amityville, 112-66. It wasn't the first time the Knights had overwhelmed an opponent at the South Jamaica middle school. Amityville competed for a while but ultimately succumbed to the Knights' numbers and talent.
Five players reached double figures for Mount Vernon, led by 6-foot-2 senior shooting guard Dave Clarke and 6-foot-7, 200 pound sophomore power forward Kevin Jones, with 18 points apiece. Jones is a frontcourt prospect out of the class of 2008 with immense potential, a long and agile post player with a fine set of mitts. 6-foot-3 senior swingman Danilio Hutchinson added 14 points, while mainstays Mike Coburn and Jon Mitchell pitched in with 13 and 10.
Amityville was led by junior point guard Raymond Jones's 21 points. The powerfully built 6-foot, 185 pounder is a penetrator who should receive some Division I feelers. Amityville was without another of their linch pins, 6-foot-2 1/2, 180 pound shooting guard Andrew Ayodeji, a strong-bodied shooter and junior with a lot of promise.
Tuesday
-
Edgar Sosa continued his smoldering play at IS8 Tuesday night, torching the Long Island Lightning (Walsh) for 41 points in Bingo's All-Stars' 98-79 win. The 6-foot-2 senior combo guard and Louisville commit scored it from virtually everywhere: the perimeter, the paint, off the drive, off the pull. He darted through traffic to set up teammates for easy finishes and wreaked havoc in the open floor.
Bingo's also received 17 points from 6-foot-3 shooting guard James Feldeine from Cardinal Hayes, who recently committed to Quinnipiac. A pair of junior guards from Wings Academy in the Bronx, burly 6-foot-1, 210 pounder Josh Spivey and 6-foot-1 Kidani Brutus, added 10 points each. Andy Garcia, a 6-foot-5 1/2, 175 pound junior combo forward from Cardinal Hayes has also impressed at IS8 this fall, contributing 10 as well.
The Lightning, composed mostly of players from the All Hallows High School team, were led by shooting guard Darryl Crawford's 21 points. The senior is one of the most underappreciated players in the city. Guards Mark Lake and Nick Walsh added 17 and 12 in the loss.
