Reporter Brian Towey of Scout.com's High School New York/New Jersey website has the latest recruiting details on the status of White Plains High School graduate David Boykin, who has made a college decision ...

In a matter of weeks, David Boykin's situation has changed dramatically.

The 6-foot-2 1-2 inch point guard out of White Plains High School was all set to put in a postgraduate year at St. Thomas More in Oakdale, Connecticut, hoping to use the summer to gather more Division I interest and to continue to hone his game.

And then, opportunity knocked.

On Thursday, Boykin participated in an open gym at Fordham. The coaching staff had scouted him during July at the Playaz Ball at Basketball City, and in AAU competition in the spring with the Connecticut Flame. Before Boykin left the school's campus, he had a scholarship offer.

"I took a visit yesterday," said Boykin. "They offered me, and I signed the papers (for the Institutional Letter of Intent). Basically, it's a done deal."

A full academic qualifier, Boykin had attracted Division I interest during his senior season at White Plains, but had opted for the prep route with the hopes of enhancing his profile among college coaches, as well as to have another year to develop and gain strength.

David's situation was somewhat unique: he had corrective surgery on his spine late in his junior year, and consequently, sat out last summer while rehabilitating. As a result of the his newly straightened spine, he added two or two inches to his frame.

Fordham and Delaware State- who recently offered Boykin a scholarship- were two programs whose interest intensified during the summer. The opportunity to play Division I basketball at a high level ultimately outweighed the prep option.

"I was going to do the prep thing, but I decided to do this instead," said Boykin. "Fordham had been recruiting me since my freshman year, but I hadn't gotten a scholarship offer from them."

A true point guard who brings nice size to the position, Boykin can run a team and distribute the ball. He is a poised player who takes good care of the rock. He is a very capable defender on and off the ball.

David has made it a point to work on his physical strength this summer.

Boykin said that his size and versatility were two things that appealed to the Fordham coaching staff.

"They liked the fact that I was a big guard," said Boykin. "The two spot is open, so I might have to play there a bit. He liked the fact that I could play both guard positions."

Boykin averaged 12.2 points as White Plains' quarterback, helping the team to a 16-6 record. Spencer Mayfield's crew featured multiple players who could surface in Division I, among them 6-foot-5 power forward Rishawn Johnson (2007), 6-foot combo guard Jamell Cromartie (2007), and 6-foot-3 wing Sean Kilpatrick, one of the area's more underrated players out of the class of 2008.

Boykin is also poised and engaging off of the court. A strong student, he should be a welcome addition to the Fordham community.
