All 3 Metro Guys Finalists for USA U-18 Team

All three players from the New York City metropolitan area will continue working out and playing at USA Basketball's 2008 Men's U18 National Team practice this week in Washington, D.C. Dominic Cheek, Lance Stephenson, Kemba Walker and 11 other players are finalists for the official 12-man squad that will play in the 2008 FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina.

The 14 finalists were announced Thursday from the group of 18 young men working out in our nation's capital. Selections were made by the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee, chaired by Syracuse's Jim Boeheim. Twenty-five gentlemen were originally invited.

The squad moves from the 'trials' phase to team training starting tomorrow, July 4th, and continuing through Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Washington Wizards training facility in the Verizon Center. The FIBA tournament begins Monday, July 14th. The final 12-man team will be determined by next Tuesday, July 8, 2008.

The other four players selected for the U18 trials are power forwards Kenny Hall from Redan H.S. in Georgia and Reeves Nelson from (Modesto Christian H.S. in California and small forwards Ari Stewart from Wheeler H.S. in Georgia and Hollis Thompson from Loyola H.S. in California.


The Wear brothers (see above) are twins who verbally committed to North Carolina. Mason Lee and Maalik Wayns have also given oral commitments to Duke and Villanova, respectively.

Following the FIBA tournament, six players will be reporting to colleges for the 2008-09 season: JaMychal Green (Alabama), Matt Humphrey (Oregon), Malcolm Lee (UCLA), Travis Releford (Kansas), Kemba Walker (Connecticut) and Wesley Witherspoon ( Memphis).
