At Army, there are no athletic scholarships. Course every student is on scholarship, one with a big commitment at the end.
The new recruit is Julian Simmons, a 6-foot-1, 185 pound guard from Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, Tex., and USMAPS, the United States Military Academy Prep School.
Nine other players on the 2008-09 roster played at USMAPS. The prep school is located in Ft. Monmouth, N.J. The team plays a schedule that includes other northeast prep schools such as Blair Academy, Notre Dame Prep, South Kent, St. Thomas More, Trinity-Pawling and Winchendon, as well as a few area junior colleges.
Simmons was named the most valuable player at USMAPS last season. He averaged 24 points, three rebounds and three assists. At Cinco Ranch, Simmons averaged 21 points, four rebounds and three assists during his senior season.
Army was 14-16 in 2007-08, 6-8 in the Patriot League. The Black Knights lost to American, 72-60, in the league semifinals.
The only player in double figures scoring, senior guard Jarell Brown, was named to the Patriot League first team. Brown averaged 18.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.6 steals in 07-08.
Then-sophomore Josh Miller was named to the PL All-Tournament Team. He averaged a team-high 18.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in the Black Knights’ two postseason games.
Coach Crews is entering his seventh season at the military academy where he is 49-120. At his previous school, Evansville, Crews compiled a 294-209 mark.
Army won a total of 20 games in Crews' first four seasons; the Black Knights have won 29 in the last two.
