SOUTH JAMAICA, N.Y. _ New Rochelle gutted out a 90-84 win over the Rising Stars in a physical, competitive opening round playoff game at the IS8 Classic on Tuesday night.

John Calarco, a 6-foot-1 senior shooting guard, led New Ro with 27 points, many of the contested variety. The gritty scorer showed the ability to finish on tough drives to the rim and shot it well off the catch.

Travis Wright, a burly and physical 6-1 swingman, added 26 points for New Rochelle in the win.

6-3 senior point guard Josh Elbaum of St. John the Baptist paced the Rising Stars with 28 points. Elbaum played with poise, created for teammates off of dribble penetration, and got to the rim.

The academic-minded lead guard is still open in his recruitment and receiving Division I interest.

Sean and Pat Wildes, a pair of 6-5 senior forwards from Chaminade High School on Long Island, also impressed for the Rising Stars with their versatility. Sean finished with 17 points while Pat pitched in with 16.

New Rochelle faces J.R.'s All-Stars, which received a first round bye, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at IS8.
